LAUNCH OUT INTO THE DEEP, AND LET DOWN YOUR NETS (Luke 5:4-7)

R.Lalthasanga

In the scripture cited (Luke 5:4-7), Jesus said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon hesitated at first, saying, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.”

Among believers today, many of us strive to serve the Lord using only our own ingenuity, wisdom, and strength. Even though we might work tirelessly, with great zeal and effort, we often spend long periods in ministry without winning a single soul (fish). However, when we wait upon the Lord’s word and labour according to His divine appointment, we will catch many souls. It was only when Simon lowered his net at the Lord’s command that he caught so many fish that the net began to break.

“Launch out into the deep” does not refer to comfortable or pleasant places. It points to the remote corners, the dangerous frontiers, and the most difficult environments—the places where people dwell in addiction, sin, and brokenness. It includes the poor, the outcasts, and those who have lost their way. When we look back at the pioneers of our faith, their ministry was never in comfort; they trekked through the most rugged and isolated places. Because of that, they led thousands of lost souls to the Lord. How glorious! When we fail to walk in the path of our calling and instead wander into areas where the Lord has not sent us, our ministry loses its power and often fails.

If we ask what the Lord has called us to do today, Isaiah 61:1-3 tells us: "To bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." Although this was a prophecy regarding Jesus’ own ministry, it is also the duty of His followers, for we follow in His footsteps. Yet, how often do we fail to serve according to God’s will and word! We gaze through the window of the world, captivated by its various distractions, and find ourselves enslaved by things that hinder us from serving the Lord. Let us realise anew that this is not pleasing to Him.

In Matthew 7:22, we see that even those who worked hard, travelled with the Gospel, and performed many wonders in the Lord’s name were considered evildoers and strangers by the Lord if He did not recognise them. Their toil and exhaustion were in vain. Therefore, let us prepare ourselves anew to be people known by the Lord, worthy of His blessing, and pleasing in His sight. Only then can we bring many lost souls to Him.

Even if your knees have grown weak, your arms hang down, and you have been overwhelmed by despair and sorrow, turn to the Lord with fresh hope. He who bore your infirmities will overlook your flaws, your failures, and your lack of wisdom. If you return to Him in repentance, He will accept you as worthy and shower you with countless blessings.

Just as there are no fish to be caught in shallow waters, there are few lost souls to be found in places of ease and comfort. It is by launching into the "deep" with our nets (the Word of God and Prayer) that we will win many souls. Not by our own strength, but relying on the strength of the Lord, let us launch out into the deep and cast our nets once again.

Thank you.
